Violent Left strikes in California

Taking their cue from violent socialists in Brazil, Democrats in California are taking things to a new level.  Rudy Peters is the GOP candidate running for Congress in Eric Swalwell’s district.  On Sunday, Farzad Fazeli pulled a switchblade and attacked Rudy Peters at a campaign event.  Peters fended him off with a campaign sign until police showed up.

This is just the most recent incident.  A GOP campaign office in Wyoming was set on fire last week.  On Twitter, a Democratic Socialist activist threatened a mass shooting at a Trump hotel, saying he would take MAGA hats as trophies.  Democrats have amped up violent rhetoric against the Right and their attacks on police and ICE.  Ocasio-Cortez suggested that ICE is raping women at will.  Other candidates like Gillum have called for the abolition of ICE.  There has also been rhetoric encouraging socialist type revolutions.  The Left needs to call off the hounds and do their part to return to civility.

Speaking of over the top rhetoric, there’s a Republican in the White House and a hurricane on the way.  You know what that means.  Leftwing media outlets didn’t even wait for the hurricane to hit before attacking Trump on his response.  Trump was attacked for suggesting the US response to Hurricane Maria was good.  The media is blaming Trump for the failures of the Puerto Rico government. They seem to forget the mayor of San Juan who was highly critical of Trump while her government failed to distribute truck loads of aid and refused to pay electrical workers.

A new study out shows that “non-criminal” illegal aliens who come here looking for work are not as “non-criminal” as everyone thought. Media and Democrats like to co-mingle legal and illegal immigrants in order to produce stats about how they are paying taxes, contributing to society, getting an education, etc.  But there’s a new stat out that shows the idea of the non-criminal illegal alien is a myth.

Illegal aliens come here looking for jobs.  At least that is a common argument used.  They are here to do the jobs Americans won’t, as others have commonly argued.  The problem is in order to have a job you have to have a social security number.  That’s why a new study is showing that about 39 million identity thefts involving social security numbers can be attributed to the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the US.  That’s almost 4 stolen social security numbers per illegal immigrant.

The thefts are much harder to detect now, thanks to Obama.  As part of his administration moves to help bring more illegal Dreamers into the country, he directed applicable agencies to stop sending letters to employers indicating if their employees had a name/SSN mismatch.  As a result, employers not subject to e-verify had no idea if their employees had bought their social security number on the black market.

Cuomo: America was never great

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is in hot water for countering Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan with one of his own: “America was never that great”.  I don’t know how far that’s going to get him with the majority of Americans, but it will play well with the radical Democratic Socialists on the Left.  Just yesterday Bernie Sanders said America is “fundamentally immoral and wrong”.  Andrew Cuomo’s brother and CNN commentator Chris Cuomo recently got himself in trouble suggesting that punching right-wingers was morally justifiable.

Economists are taking Elizabeth Warren to task over her far fetched Accountable Capitalism Act.  Warren, who opposes free market capitalism, came up with the idea of having corporations have to obtain a “Federal charter” to operate.  The license, in addition to the hoops they have to jump through to work in their state, would raise $1 billion in fee taxes.  Warren’s so-called “charter” would require corporate directors to consider not just their stakeholders, but also their employees and communities.

Of course, this is moronic.  Any well run company has to consider the well-being of their employees and communities or the free market will eliminate that company from competition.  In fact, that point was made by none other than BET co-founder Robert Johnson.  The Black Entertainment Television co-founder said “Most companies and most boards look at all of their stakeholders, not only their shareholders. They look at their employees, they look at the community where they reside and do business, they look at even the vendors that they do business with. So I think it’s a solution in search of a problem that’s absolutely not necessary,”

What Warren’s bill, along with the exemptions for friends of the ruling party that we have seen with previous Socialist overreaches, would create a new avenue for crony capitalism.  In other words, to get an exemption for your federal charter or to guarantee you have your charter maintained, you have to stay friendly with the party in power.  We saw the same thing with ACA where Obama’s biggest supporters received exemptions to various new labor rules.

Trump is implementing what Obama failed to do with his new Buy America push.  Trump is planning on using an executive order to create rules to ensure that federal agencies use American made goods and services for their projects.  There are questions about the legality of the executive order and sure to be legal challenges.  There are also issues of increased costs to the taxpayers if the government has to buy more expensive American goods.

Obama tried and failed to pass a buy American provision in 2009 and again in 2011.  He backed off of the provision in 2009 after American companies who sell overseas swayed him away from the influence of the US labor unions with fears of foreign retaliation.  When Obama flopped back to supporting Buy American, the Jobs Act of 2011 was squashed by the GOP.

Our opinion?  It was wrong when Obama tried it, it’s wrong now.  Free trade produces lower prices for consumers and taxpayers, and competition helps American producers to be efficient.  A better way to help American producers is to cut taxes and regulation so that they can compete on the high end of the global scale.  But Trump is doubly wrong by doing this as an executive order rather than through Congress.  Many Democrats support Buy American provisions.  Labor unions love it.  By going it alone, Trump will alienate conservative and free market GOP members, but I doubt he’ll receive any recognition from the left.  Democrats also supported protectionist tariffs, until Trump did it.  All around this is poor strategy and contrary to free market principles.

Ontario, Canada is scrapping a basic income program after discovering that it was unsustainable.  The plan, which provided $17,000 to individuals whether they worked or not and half the benefit if they did work, was started in 2017 and meant to be a three year program.  There was shock and anger from the beneficiaries who will soon see those government provided checks dry up.  Universal basic income in the US would cost $3.8 trillion a year, or twice our current annual tax revenues.

Speaking of admitting failure, Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro is joining a proud history of socialist dictators who finally realize their economic model doesn’t work.  However, unlike Gorbachev and Yeltsin, Maduro is vowing to press on.  While blaming outside forces, he called on his comrades to figure out a way to make the economy work.

Speaking of economic failure, I wonder how many people think Obama had something to do with the economy getting better?  What actually helped during the second half of Obama’s Presidency was a GOP congress wrangling out of control deficits mixed with quantitative easing from the Fed.  The Fed bought up trillions in US private equities to artificially jumpstart the economy, and lowered interest rates to almost nothing.  Now, in the Trump era of American prosperity, the bill is coming due.  That is the biggest thing that keeps JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon up at night.  He sees it as the biggest economic threat currently.  It’s like Obama put America’s economy on a zero interest credit card, and now Trump has to pay it off.

No MAGA Allowed
Never mind making a cake. You can refuse to serve someone simply because you don’t like their politics according to a judge in New York. There are two differences between this and the cake ruling just handed down by the Supreme Court.  The first is that wearing a MAGA hat doesn’t make you constitutionally protected.  Yeah, I know, free speech.  That’s not what they argued.  They said Make America Great Again was a religious expression.  I didn’t really buy that either.
The other difference is that the bar wasn’t asked to serve him a specialty drink celebrating his politics.  In other words, it’s not like he walked in and asked the bar to make him a MAGA Mai Tai*.  He was refused general services based on his politics.
Actually, this is a victory for the freedom of business owners. The judge’s interpretation is that since he wasn’t kicked out specifically for his religious views (or any other civil rights protected status), it was A-OK. So you could refuse to serve someone for being a liberal, for wearing saggy pants, or many other reasons.  You could kick out anyone who wears a suit and tie on Sunday morning and say it was how they dressed, not their religion.
In Chicago, if you happen to be one of the handful of conservatives left, you could even refuse to serve blacks just with the basic assumption that they are all voting Democrat. The DNC assumes that, it’d be reasonable for you to as well. Of course, everyone has conveniently forgotten that back in the day it WAS the Democrats who refused to serve blacks.
Freedom not to serve people is also a victory for consumers. After all, if someone hates you because of how you look, what you wear, or who you vote for, why would you want to give them money? If I’m about to walk into an establishment and buy their stuff, I actually wouldn’t mind if they met me with a sign that says “don’t pay me, I hate you”. Or as Trump haters put it, “I love everyone except for you”. Sounds more warm and fuzzy when they put it that way.
